1) Mister Mick, how do you feel to being interviewed from a South American country like Chile?

Mick : I am very pleased. I find South American bands very interesting.

2)We see that he has devoted much time to the music as many of us in this website, for that reason we ask about if you never learned to play an instrument or play in any band?

Mick : I played very bad bass in a couple of bands but nothing worth talking about.

3) In the moment you started your activities, how do you remember the Political situation in England?

Mick : 1976? Britain was very poor, there were a lot national strikes, the right wing was on

the rise. It was horrible. Things improved for a bit, but then Thatcher came along!

Tough times.

4)Before you fansite Panache had some work in the area of communications remember? Where the name did came and what were the most memorable bands that could work there?

Mick : Panache was my fanzine, but I honestly can’t remember where the name came from!

10988541_10155201532715319_1323317160894616340_n

I interviewed a few of my favourites early on, like The Adverts, Gloria Mundi, Ultravox

(when John Foxx sang with them), then onto Goth, and it did 55 issues in the end.

5)For those who have not known Panaché you could describe them in some paragraphs what was?

Mick : it  was pretty rough and ready and was me typing things up on sheets of paper as

columns. Then you would cut the columns out and lay them out on a page with

photos or illustrations and you make your master page, then you take those to a

printer to get them printed. You staple the printed pages together and sell it at gigs.

6)What mark to the end of Panache??? Do you think Panache leave some legacy?

Mick : No legacy, no. There were many great fanzines around. I stopped it in the early 90’s.

It just wasn’t needed any more. I now do something similar as a free pdf magazine

online (The Mick) which you can find on my website > http://www.mickmercer.com

144391473

7)We understand that you had the honor of naming a musical and aesthetic genre called the punk Goth, after hearing an album of Joy Division, true or just a rumor? Otherwise it is said that Ian Curtis not takes it too well that’s so true?

Mick : No! Not me. That isn’t true. I doubt Joy Division wanted to be called Gothic. Tony

Wilson the man behind Factory Records described their music as Gothic, but he also

described it as other things as well, so he wasn’t saying they’re a Goth band. And

they weren’t. They were successful before the Goth scene started.

640px-Anthony_H_Wilson_hosting_After_Dark_in_1988

8)Do you think the Post is or was necessarily punk Goth music? In addition to those you consider Pioneers of these genres?

Mick :Some bands were influences on Goth (like Joy Division                                                     , The Cure                                    y Siouxsie & The Banshees    ) but they were all successful and doing their own thing before theGoth scene started. Goth was a big scene by 1983, but the first two main bands were UK Decay            and Bauhaus    , then people like Sex Gang Children and The Danse Society                            . Other bands also drew the audiences together in the late 70’s very early

80’s. Gloria Mundi, early Ultravox, Adam & The Ants                                                                    , Killing Joke   , Theatre Of Hate                            …fans of those bands would be seen a lot at all early Goth gigs.

9)What do you think was the need for birth of punk Post or what is the difference with current Punk rock? On the other hand what kinds of people were hearing these bands; socioeconomic, political condition, you can remember?

Mick : The need for Post-Punk came out the desire to create music which wasn’t as one-
dimensional as Punk, that’s all it was. It still had the powerful energy of Punk. Later on things were milder, with less tension in the music, and that was called Indie. The same thing can been seen today. Indie music is so bland that people are looking to Post-Punk for excitement and inspiration.

10)In what parts of England has started to manifest all this obscure movement? What were the premises that housed this music???

Mick : Goth was mainly England. There were a few bands from Scotland and Eire/Northern

Ireland but not many. Mainly England. Started in small venues but that band UK Decay were important because they toured regularly, built up a big following and invited cool early Goth bands to support them at bigger venues.

11)Have you ever had trouble with the police for their dress or you’ve heard?

Mick :

Me? I was stopped by the police a few times, but never got into any trouble apart

from being locked in the cells overnight when drunk.

12)Do you believe that goth music had to be born from punk to have been able to publicize?

Mick : Goth happened naturally. But it happened because a) Punk happened and b) Punk

showed how easy it was to form a band. People wanted to start their own bands

with a darker feel, imagery and personal lyrics instead of statements, but they were

inspired and excited by Punk, which is why early Goth bands all had such different

approaches but were full of energy.

13)After Panache, in what other media did you collaborate? And what was the band that has enjoy more collaborate?

Mick : I went on to work on music papers like Melody Maker, Record Mirror and NME, and to edit magazines called Zigzag and Siren. I kept my fanzine going all through those years. I wrote about loads of bands I liked the most, like Ausgang                            , The Dancing Did      , Dead Man’s Shadow                          , Sex Gang Children , Action Pact     .                                                   .

14)We understand that now you have your own radio show, how was this?   Before, you had participated in something similar? You had some appearance on television?

Mick : I have been asked to do television but I would find it too boring, and have been

asked to do radio before but I’m not mad about it. I do a little internet radio show because it’s enjoyable. It’s three hours, live every Sunday night, but because of the uploads you can listen when it is most convenient for you. I am playing to people that

have friended me on facebook. The shows are uploaded to Mixcloud. I genuinely try

and make it interesting and will continue to try and do so. All the old uploads are here

MickMercerRadioAd

15) What do you think of the relationship between the underground and

the media??? What has it evolved from the old days and now?

Mick : It is no different now than it was before. Mainstream media finds the underground

uncomfortable. I personally believe this to be a good thing.

16)How have been generational changes for the movement?

Mick : It changes through time. Goth is the longest-running underground scene which

remains constant, because it is always evolving. Things like Punk or Mod

34-mod-shoes-Mods-in-Limerick-in-the-1980s

tend to come and go in waves of action. Goth develops in its own way and creates other off

of it. It helped Post-Punk become popular again, and Steampunk developed out of

Goth.

10401457_660834040638698_6314524694261250829_n

17)What do you know about Chile? Do you know something about their bands?

Mick : I don’t know much about Chile itself but when I did my last big music book (Music To

Die For)

hqdefault

I tried to get as many South American bands in as I could, and that included

some from Chile. Whenever I do a book I like to include bands from the whole word,

not just a few countries. I have reviewed Chilean compilations found through the

Zombified blog on my own Facebook page, and recently played The Fallacy            on my

show. My favourite Chilean band would be Espejos Muertos.

18)Sound pretentious but you’ve done everything you wanted as a person in the media?

Mick : Yes, I guess? I just want to do more of it and to do it all better. I am starting to write

novels now as well.

19308_10155339396830319_6161313162182881785_n

19)A question a our reader asked us is: Because of the conflict that exists in Chile about The smiths, you attended smiths, were Post punk?

Mick : Is there conflict? By the time The Smiths came along it was always clear which

bands were Post-Punk (which was dying out) and which were Indie. The Smiths were very much an Indie band.

20)What can you tell us about yourself, your musical tastes, how tall are, hobbies, favorite food? Adding a question from another Mexican reader, What is your favorite band of all time?? How tall???

Mick : 6 foot 2 inches. I am vegetarian and have been since I was a child, so I

like India and Italian food best. I like Goth, Post-Punk and Punk music mainly. I don’t

have time for hobbies as all my spare time is spent as a volunteer with a cat charity,

helping find homes for stray cats. My all-time favourite band that is no longer active

was a British band called The Dancing Did. My favourite band that exists today is

Ataraxia from Italy.

21:) What was the novel that you recommend to a novice reader to delve into your work? For the rest which is the meaning of your books?

Mick : My books look at Goth at the time I write them. The first book I wrote (Gothic Rock

Black Book) was a history book about the scene, because it was the first book on

Goth music ever published. Since then I have tried to reflect what is happening at the time I write each book.

il_340x270.361343716_ivbu

22)What are your plans for 2015?

Mick : Getting all my books onto Kindle, bringing out a new novel, a book about bootlegs,

and I am writing a new book about the state of Goth now. I will also be continuing to

do my little radio show, because it’s fun.

23)Any message for your readers to give a finishing touch to this interview?

Mick : Don’t be bothered if people don’t share your interests. That doesn’t matter. Much of

the finest creativity always begins underground, and much of it stays underground.

Stay true to your own talents, and if you want to get involved with something artistic

just do it. Don’t wait for someone else, just do it yourself. You will amazed how easy

it can be, and the freedom you feel because of it.   And thank you very much for the interview.

Cheers!

Mick

Mick : ¡No! Yo no. Eso no es cierto. Dudo Joy Division quisiera ser llamado gótico. Tony

The Dancing Did  , Dead Man’s Shadow       , Sex Gang, Action Pact       .

hqdefault

fue una banda británica llamada The Dancing Did.

Mick :

¡Saludos

Mick

Into of out with Unstoppable Achievers

10678803_877891992235265_2019481176778534937_n

1)How do you feel being interviewed from far away specifically from SouthAmerica, Chile?

MJS : Being interviewed is a lot like making love to a beautiful woman….! Or

maybe not!?!

KM :  Hello Chile! It feels good be interviewed from so far away.

The world has become smaller with new technologies, the future has arrived.

2)Tell us something of the origin of the band and how  started this project?

MJS :Unstoppable Achievers began so I would have a vehicle for my songwriting and because I was frustrated by other bands I was in, I wanted to do what I wanted to do, something weird, psychedelic, warm and fuzzy….. And so it was!

3) Who make up this band? Under that record label are?

Unstoppable Achievers consist of

Matthew James Saw – vocals / guitar / effects   and

Kevin Matthews – drums / vocals / effects

MJS- We have no record label and I imagine we’re very unlikely to ever have one!

We’re a bleedin’ liability!

by Shaun Histed-Todd (6)

4) What are the shots that make their discography? Because you have chosen the digital format for their releases instead of the physical disk?

MJS : All our releases so far have been digital only- We like this as the music stays ‘atomless’ just as music should be- Our songs are our ‘Atomless Fantasies’… Having said that, some sort of physical release would be nice though- 7″singles are probably the way to go, Most of our songs are pretty brief so we could probably get an album on a 7″!!

5) Why do you chose to call the band Unstoppable  achievers, some special reason?

MJS :I wanted a band name that sounded positive and uplifting rather than moody, dark or obscure (theres plenty of that in the songs themselves!) My Girlfriend pointed out that in London there are lots of church ministries with names that sound like progressive 70’s funk bands- ‘The Mountain of Fire and Miracles’, ‘Ceraphim and Cherubim’, etc… She found ‘Christs Unstoppable Achievers’ painted on a wall in Peckham, So We nicked it!

6)How do you define your sound? and what is the main topic in your lyrics?

KM :

We think the sound of our band is quirky & very English.

We have been described as »Kenneth Williams fronting the Buzzcocks».

But we would maybe prefer Spike Milligan fronting The Soft Machine!

MJS : I would define our sound as noisy, whimsical, stupid, clever, wet and windy with chances of feedback! And toys! Our set-up when we play live is quite stripped down, I sing and play fuzz guitar, Kevin plays just a snare and floor tom, and then we both make beautiful/annoying noises with various esoteric electronic devices, or whatever comes to hand. The songs rarely have a clear, definable ‘meaning’ as such, its more a stream of strange words and phrases that make nice pictures in my head. Hopefully they make nice pictures in other peoples heads too!

7) Besides Unstoppable Achievers have been playing before in other band?

KM :Yes, we have played in other band’s before, both individually & collectively.

MJS :, Kevin and i play together in Sex gang Children

and our  old  band  DC Molina . I also played Bass in Selfish Cunt.

8)We know that you two are members of legendary band Sex Gang Children Post-Punk, returning to the past. We want to hear how they met Andi and how was his arrival in the band?

KM:  Legendary? Thank you, a great compliment.

As individuals, we met Andi & joined Sex Gang Children at quite different times, approximately 15 years apart.

We continue to enjoy greatly making art and performing together.

But with respect, we would prefer to talk about Unstoppable Achievers in this interview.

MJS :Yes, playing with Sex Gang Children is challenging but hilarious!

9)Do you feel comfortable being musician at this point in your life?

KM : Yes, we are very comfortable being musicians. Although we generally feel uncomfortable at this point in our lives!

MJS : I am quite comfortable thankyou- just not financially comfortable! Although being a musician is a very difficult way to try and earn a living, its definitely better nowadays with the internet- Bands can release music, sell merchandise, do everything themselves really, cutting out the 300 middlemen of the ‘music business’. The death of the music business is a beautiful thing and should be encouraged!
10)What are your favorite bands and influences?Do you  have hobbies?

MJS :

We are influenced by everything, including fish, the sea, colours, magic, aeroplanes, furniture, and alcohol. We also favour discarded, abandoned, broken things. Musically?

 Swell Maps

, Syd Barrett

, Neu!

, Faust

, Cardiacs , Clinic

, etc .

KM: Our favourite band is Cardiacs. Our influences include Throbbing Gristle and The Kinks.

Our hobbies include reading (books mainly). Although slim political & religious pamphlets (often distributed free of cost outside many of London’s subway stations) are quite diverting.

11)A reader of our website feels bad for not being able to see you yet, but she would stay very happy if you answer one question:  what is you  height ?

Unstoppable Achievers : We are 175 cm tall.

12)Do you know something about chile???

MJS : All i know of Chile is a little Victor Jara and Violetta Parra. Which is very nice. What should we know about Chile? You tell us!!

13)finally: Any message to your readers??

Unstoppable Achievers : Yes, EMPTY YOUR POCKETS AND BE MODERN! And always strive to be an Unstoppable Achiever! Thankyou!

Posted in Entrevistas with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on enero 1, 2015 by lavieenrosenfeld

10678803_877891992235265_2019481176778534937_n

O quizás no?!

KM : Hola Chile!

Yo buscaba hacer algo .

Buscaba hacer algo extraño , psicodelico , cálido y difuso …así ocurrió .

3) Quienes componen esta banda ? Bajo que sello discográfico están ?

Unstoppable Achievers consta de :

Matthew James Saw vocales / guitarra / efectos

Kevin Matthews baterias  / vocales / efectos

by Shaun Histed-Todd (6)

y nuestra previa banda  DC Molina .

Seguimos disfrutando enormemente hacer arte y actuar juntos.

MJS :Estoy bastante cómodo gracias simplemente no financieramente cómodo! aunque

Swell Maps

, Syd Barrett

, Neu!

, Faust

, Cardiacs

, Clinic

, etc .

Kevin Matthews : Nuestra favorita banda es Cardiacs  . Nuestra influencia incluye a Throbbing Gristle y The Kinks.

the coagulant interview with Andi Sex Gang

Posted in Entrevistas with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on septiembre 27, 2014 by lavieenrosenfeld

1) First of all how you feel when interviewed by Andi half of South America? and I think this is your first opportunity to be interviewed on
some South America  media , right?

Andi  :»I feel it a good opportunity to communicate..and I make art in order to communicate my expression. This is not my first time being interviewed by South American media. Some years back a major radio station in Peru, if I remember correctly, did an ´Andi Sex Gang Special’ over 4 nights, featuring a different album each night interspersed with interviews. So my cherry’s definitely been popped regarding media exposure in South America.

2)  How do you define yourself as a person? in what music category  and
according to your own words you define your musical projects?

Andi  : «I’ve always believed that you get a more interesting perspective of  yourself from what other people who know you have to say about you, but I would say this of myself..I think I am a fairly simple person who lives a fairly simple life.. without confusion and with total determination and
clarity..someone who is basically grounded and in tune with all life around me. But in a nutshell.. to describe myself, I have always found this description fits me well. English charm, Greek resolve, lethal Irish temper.
First and foremost the music comes from somewhere deep in my soul. I don’t particularly like ‘categories’ as such as I don’t think it applies to the music. Music is a pure language and beyond
categorisation. I would say someone like Tom Waits is a good example of that. I like the sense and feel of freedom in his approach to his songs. As for my music I would say this, it’s ‘out there’..anything goes, no restrictions. I let the music dictate it’s own course and where it should go. It’s arthouse, it’s bastard art.»

3) What’s the Sex gang Children concept ?

Andi  : «Simple. Make art, challenge pre-conceived ideas and allow for new perceptions. Touch the very souls of all those who are prepared to listen.»

4)  Under that record music label is working ?

Andi  : «Our own label, songandlegend.com
In the late 1980’s I re-acquired the copyrights to the early SGC/ASG recordings and financed the production of all albums since, therefore retaining ownership and licensing to other record labels as our own company when it suited us. I still license out to other companies but rarely now, I want to activate our own label more so than before’ I feel it’s worth the  extra work involved to do that.»

5) In which part of england are you and how was your introduction into the music world? What can you tell us about your musical influences?

Andi  :»I spend my time between London and Berlin. As for my introducion into the music world, well that was pretty simple and straight forward really.I saw a door I needed to go through and I kicked it open.
Edith Piaf and Johnny Cash were my earliest exposures to music and that has left a lasting impression upon me, but Leonard Cohen, Marc Bolan, Bowie, Eno, Sex Pistols, early Ants and Theatre Of Hate really formulated my direction in music.»

6) What are your hobbies in your free time? a question from a reader Rushed blue, what s your height?

Andi  : «I don’t really have hobbies as such, everything I do is connected to
the art, whether it’s taking photographs of shape and form or
wandering through art galleries, museums or old churches, it’s all
connected and feeds the machine of self expression. Outside of making
music I still continue to paint..this was my first medium of self
expression which I started as a small child.
My height is 5′ 6″ or thereabouts.»

7) What do you know about our country named Chile or at least know something about our music scene ?

Andi  : «Unfortunately I don’t really know much about the contemporary music scene in Chile, however I do know of Victor Jara. I remember the CIA backed coup in 1973 when I was a child. I had read a big feature on it
by the noted Australian journalist John Pilger. This was the first time I had heard of Victor Jara, and I sympathised wholeheartedly with what had happened to him. I have since loved his music, his mind, his spirit. That man died for his music and beliefs..literally, and there is no greater sacrifice than that. Oh yes, I like your red wine.»

8) What’s the difference at your view  between Sex gang children and Andi sex gang solo project ?

Andi  : «There is not too much difference really. ASG solo projects I tend to approach with a different sense of freedom, sometimes more ‘out there’and avant garde. I’ll come from a certain angle and tend to play everything myself, so it comes from a very pure, personal and concentrated approach and mostly with a spontaneous application..as I
see it..as I feel it.

For SGC it depends very much on the songs that I feel are ‘SGC songs’ and the band play the all important role in that process of realising those songs and that’s what makes it an SGC project. Either way, the music is always set, it’s all there in place, it’s just interpreted in a different way according to what the song demands.»

9) Your solo music has touched the live music or only  studio music ?

Andi  : «I have played live solo shows in many forms, with a full band, with just guitarists in a more unplugged style, and one man shows for my live performances of Dracula and  spoken word set to music. I have had 13 solo studio album releases and have a new one ready to release this year.»

10)  A while ago put available to the public for free a version not available  until now of Sebastiane. What motivated you to share it after so long and  why you preferred the version we all know launch this unreleased version?

Andi : «It felt right to do it now. I had been planning over the years to release that particular track along with three other alternate versions/mixes of other songs from the Song and Legend studio sesions as part of a rare unreleased collection. Our photographer and visual stage director Bari Goddard suggestion to release that track as a free download, as part of our ‘Three decades of art attack’ London concert. The version that ended up on the Song and Legend album was the right choice for that album.»

11)  What could you tell us your latest studio watchdog acerca Entitled Viva Vigilante ? what is the concept, and the artwork of the same?

Andi  : «this album was in production on and off for several years. the circle of musicians involved on viva was varied

including former band members cam campbell, who had worked on blind! and arco valley and adrian portas who had worked on medea and western songs for children.
however, the nucleus of the viva album remained myself, kevin matthews
and matthew saw.
Messenger, salumun child, die traube and hollywood slim we had already played in our live set, so they were the first songs we recorded and we just took the rest of the album from there. During the second period of recording sessions i brought in the violin talents of my neice anna phoebe. at the time she was playing with roxy music, so we had to work around her schedule with them. There was very little rehearsal if at all on the rest of the album, we just worked from the demos i had given to the band. a couple of run throughs on each song and then straight to tape, as they say.
That way the pressure and intensity of performance was guaranteed, giving it a real edge. something which i felt was such an important ingredient in the making of this album.
Actually, pigs to men i wrote during one of the studio sessions and layed down the acoustic track immediately, playing it to kevin and matthew..just once.. and we just took it from there.
I think the album is rich in it’s make up and execution, ornate and baroquial in it’s sound and arangement, yet it does have that definite glam tinge with a raw edge and that all important, seductive
intensity.
My modus operandi? go with the feel of whatever i’m working on. be flexible in order to adapt to any given situation with a project. if i get stuck on something, if i feel i have lost sight of it temporarily, then i will move on to something else and come back to it when the time and feel is right to do so. «
12) You think we’ll get surprised with Viva  vigilante knowing that is your most recent studio release in more than 1 decade?

Andi  : I don’t know..you tell me!

13) Why did you choose Japan as the first place to promote your new album? You Might tell the differences between the japanese scene and  the london
scene?

Andi  :»Actually, Viva Vigilante was premiered live at The Parkbuhne , Amphitheatre in Leipzig last year. In Tokyo we played 2 nights and each set differed, but included more of the older material as well as songs from Viva. But Leipzig was where Viva was first and fully premiered.
There is a lot of good and interesting stuff happening in the Japanese underground scene at the moment and all involved in that scene seem very dedicated to it. I met some damn good people over there»

14) And how was the experience in Garage London this year, how was the
reception of the attendees ?

Andi  :»The show was highly enjoyable to do. The audience were very warm and connected and we all felt very honoured by their reception. It will stand in our memories as one of the highlights of all the SGC concerts.»

15) Over the years many admirers yours caught their attention the artwork  of each release of Sex gang CHildren .
Who is responsible for those designs as you choose which will be the cover art? What is the main theme of your lyrics?

Andi :»For the early singles Beasts, Into the Abyss, Sebastiane and Mauritia Mayer, I chose the covers. Song and Legend was a photograph taken by the guy who owned Illuminated Records, the label who worked with us at
the time. He suggested to me it would be perfect for the feel of the album, I completely agreed. I did the design for the Blind! album, a collage of pop art imagery from Andy Warhol and Peter Blake and the album Bastard Art.
I would say my lyrics are like a mirror that reflect the human face, but I don’t think that lyrics should ever be explained.»

16) What were the reasons for the  break-up  in the 80’s of  Sex gang  Children   ?

Andi  : «Personnell problems, but which 80’s Sex Gang..break up..83 or 85?

17) What are your views on the following topics:
a) Policy, b) Religion c) Healthy Food

Andi  : » Politic is dead. Religion is a wounded pigeon. Healthy Food? Why not… there is that saying..’You are what you eat’.»

18) Do you think that in the near future can be something official on a  visit to South America?

Andi : «Everything is possible. I think it’s important to do it. I think it
would be a very good thing to realise.»

19) To end this interview you have any message for your readers around the
world, especially for people in South America?

Andi  : «Always trust your instinct, never compromise your Art. Be a warrior not a slave.»
